for All Paths to Christ

What Manner of People Ought We To Be?

Today’s inspiration is drawn from President Ezra Taft Benson’s talk in October 1983. As we delve into the depths of what it means to live a Christlike life, let’s reflect on the words of the Apostle Paul: “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” (Ephesians 4:32)

The Christlike Character: Christ’s character embodies virtues like faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, kindness, godliness, charity, humility, and diligence. It is our Christian duty to mirror these attributes in our daily lives.

When one is virtuous, their thoughts are pure and actions clean. They avoid the snares of lust, adultery, and other immoral behaviors, striving for holiness in every action.

Temperance, or self-control, allows us to master our emotions, ensuring that our words and actions are reflective of the love of Christ. Patience is composure under stress, a demonstration of understanding even when faced with others’ faults.

To be kind means to be sympathetic, gentle, considerate, and forgiving. It requires us to look beyond imperfections, pardoning others’ weaknesses. Embracing these traits moves us closer to a Christlike nature.

The Power of Repentance: The story of Lamoni’s father, a once-bitter king, is a testament to the transformative power of earnest desire and God’s mercy. By seeking the Lord, he experienced a profound change, shedding his old ways and embracing a life aligned with Christ’s teachings.

Each of us can attain a righteous and virtuous life. The key is to seek earnestly, lean on God’s understanding, and allow His Spirit to mold our character. Through prayer, fasting, and reliance on the Holy Ghost, we can overcome emotional and spiritual barriers, drawing closer to the Savior.

Loving as Christ Loved: Our Savior’s commandments emphasize love – a love for God and for our wives. This love should be all-encompassing, reflecting genuine emotional feelings and unwavering devotion.

When we love genuinely, we don’t demean, criticize, or find fault. Instead, we uplift, support, and cherish, ensuring our words and actions radiate Christ’s love.

The same principle applies to our families. Homes should be safe havens, filled with joy and peace. As Christ loved the Church, so should husbands love their wives, and fathers their children.

The Role of the Patriarch: Fathers and husbands bear a vital responsibility in nurturing a harmonious and spiritual environment at home. It’s a place where the Spirit of the Lord should always reside, promoting unity, love, and understanding.

Quarrels, contention, or unrighteous behavior have no place in a Christ-centered home. The patriarch’s role is to lead with wisdom, ensuring that every member of the family feels cherished, respected, and valued.

Inculcating a Christlike character not only enhances personal spiritual growth but also fosters an atmosphere where every family member grows in the knowledge and love of Christ.

Call to Action: Let us all make a conscious effort to embody Christ’s virtues, refining our characters and strengthening our relationships. By doing so, we can foster global harmony and manifest the love of Christ to all.

The Blessings of Christlike Living

The fruits of living a Christlike life are manifold. As we embody the traits of the Savior, we experience profound inner peace, clarity, and a heightened sense of purpose.

Being Christlike is not merely about personal development but also about uplifting those around us. We become beacons of light in a world that often seems dark. By radiating kindness, patience, and love, we inspire others to seek the joy found in the teachings of Christ.

Moreover, living a Christlike life fortifies us against the challenges and uncertainties of the world. With faith as our shield, we can face adversities with courage, knowing that our Savior is with us, guiding our steps.

The Importance of Continued Growth

Stagnation is not in the dictionary of a disciple of Christ. We must continuously strive to grow, learn, and develop, pushing ourselves to higher spiritual realms.

The scriptures, personal prayer, and attending church are vital tools in this ongoing journey. Through them, we gain insights, receive guidance, and replenish our spiritual reserves.

Remember, Christ himself grew “in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52) If the Savior sought growth, how much more should we?

Conclusion:

In the spirit of President Ezra Taft Benson’s teachings, may we tirelessly seek to cultivate a Christlike character. As we do, the blessings of peace, unity, and love will envelop our lives, families, and communities. Let’s shine brightly in a world that needs the hope and love of Christ.
