Understanding the Laws and Ordinances in "Preach My Gospel"

Today’s inspiration is drawn from Lesson 5: Laws and Ordinances from “Preach My Gospel: A Guide to Missionary Service.” This lesson highlights the importance of laws and ordinances in guiding us to live joyfully with faith in Jesus Christ and hope for eternal life with our Heavenly Father. Let’s delve into the key aspects of these laws and ordinances and how they apply to our lives.

The Role of Laws and Ordinances

Laws and ordinances are divine guidelines that help us navigate our spiritual journey. They are designed to help us stay on the path to exaltation and experience greater peace and joy. By living these laws, we can retain a remission of our sins and find answers to life’s questions. The ultimate goal is to belong to the true Church of Jesus Christ and enjoy the security that comes with this knowledge.

Priesthood and Church Organizations

The priesthood is a sacred power and authority given to men to act in God’s name for the salvation of His children. Through the priesthood, we receive essential ordinances and blessings such as healing, comfort, and counsel. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is led by apostles and prophets who hold this priesthood authority.

Priesthood authority was restored to the earth in 1829, when John the Baptist conferred the Aaronic Priesthood on Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. Later, Peter, James, and John conferred the Melchizedek Priesthood upon them. This restoration allows worthy men to perform sacred ordinances like baptism and confirmation.

The Role of Women

Women also play a crucial role in the Church. While they do not hold the priesthood, they are given priesthood authority to perform certain functions, such as missionary work, teaching, and leading in various Church organizations. President Dallin H. Oaks explained that women receive this authority to perform important tasks that are binding and necessary for our salvation.

Key Ordinances and Their Significance

Baptism and Confirmation
Baptism is the first ordinance of the gospel, symbolizing the cleansing of our sins and our commitment to follow Jesus Christ. Confirmation follows baptism, where we receive the gift of the Holy Ghost to guide and comfort us.

The Sacrament

The sacrament is a weekly ordinance that allows us to renew our baptismal covenants. It is a time to reflect on the Atonement of Jesus Christ and recommit to live according to His teachings.

The Temple and Eternal Marriage

Temples are sacred places where we make covenants and receive ordinances necessary for exaltation. One of the most significant temple ordinances is eternal marriage, where couples are sealed for time and eternity. This sealing ensures that family relationships can continue beyond this life.

The Importance of Missionary Work

Sharing the gospel is a vital part of living the laws and ordinances. When we share the gospel, we experience joy and have the Spirit of the Lord more abundantly. The Lord commands us to preach the gospel to all the world, giving everyone the opportunity to accept or reject it. By living the gospel faithfully and sharing it with others, we set an example and show the blessings that come from living the gospel.

Serving Others

Service is a fundamental principle in the Church. When we serve others, we are serving God. We are encouraged to give of our time, talents, and means to help meet the needs of others. The Church is organized in a way that provides numerous opportunities for service, including callings, ministering, and humanitarian efforts.

Teaching and Learning in the Church

Teaching and learning are essential for our spiritual growth. The Church provides many opportunities for members to teach one another the gospel and support each other in their spiritual journey. Teaching assignments come with materials and support to help members succeed.

Enduring to the End

Living the gospel is not just about making covenants; it’s about keeping them throughout our lives. Enduring to the end means continuing to exercise faith in Christ, repenting, and renewing our covenants. By doing so, we receive continued guidance from the Holy Ghost and draw closer to our Heavenly Father.

President Russell M. Nelson emphasized the importance of staying on the covenant path, which opens the door to every spiritual privilege and blessing, including eternal life. Though some may not endure, it is our personal responsibility to work out our own salvation and serve and love those whose faith has weakened.

Understanding and living the laws and ordinances outlined in “Preach My Gospel” is essential for our spiritual growth and happiness. These divine guidelines help us navigate our lives with faith in Jesus Christ and hope for eternal life. As we strive to keep these laws and ordinances, we can experience greater peace, joy, and purpose.

Let’s commit to living these principles and sharing them with others. By doing so, we can help make the world a better place, one act of service and one shared testimony at a time. As we follow the example of Jesus Christ and keep our covenants, we can find true happiness and eternal blessings. Link to Original:  Lesson 5: Laws and Ordinances
