The Miraculous Coming Forth of the Book of Mormon

Today’s inspiration is drawn from “The Coming Forth of the Book of Mormon” by Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles during April 2020.

The history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is marked by remarkable events and divine manifestations. One of the most pivotal moments in this history was the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. This sacred record, comparable to the Bible in its spiritual significance, played a crucial role in the unfolding of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ in this dispensation.

A Divine Commission

A Divine Commission

The Prophet Joseph Smith once declared, “Take away the Book of Mormon, and the revelations, and where is our religion? We have none.” This statement underscores the profound importance of this ancient scriptural record in the Latter-day Saint faith. It is not merely an additional volume of scripture; it is a testament to God’s love for His children Love-All.

The Book of Mormon reveals the Lord Jesus Christ’s selfless and divine atoning sacrifice, providing us with a second witness alongside the Bible. Moreover, it narrates Christ’s ministry among the Nephites following His Resurrection. This sacred text also carries the message that the remnant of the house of Israel will unite through His latter-day work and will not be cast off forever.

A Miraculous Unveiling

The coming forth of the Book of Mormon was not an ordinary occurrence—it was a miracle from start to finish. It began long before Joseph Smith received the gold plates from the angel Moroni. Ancient prophets had foreseen the advent of this sacred book in our day. Isaiah prophesied about a sealed book, foretelling contention over God’s word and the performance of His marvelous work and wonders. Ezekiel and Lehi, in the Book of Mormon, spoke of the sticks of Judah and Ephraim uniting to confound false doctrine and reveal covenants.

On the evening of September 21, 1823, Moroni visited Joseph Smith, imparting knowledge about God’s marvelous work and the translation and publication of the ancient American prophets’ inspired words. These visits lasted through the night, setting the stage for the miraculous events to follow.

A Divine Translation

The process of translating the Book of Mormon was itself a miracle. Unlike traditional translations by scholars who understand ancient languages, Joseph Smith’s translation was a revelation with the aid of physical instruments provided by the Lord. He translated hieroglyphs—the knowledge of which was lost to the world. Joseph, an unlearned youth, took on the monumental task of combating worldly wisdom and ignorance with this new revelation. The Lord’s assistance was evident in the remarkably short time it took to complete the translation.

Witnesses to the Divine

The Book of Mormon’s credibility was further established through witnesses chosen by the Lord. Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris were the first witnesses who testified that they saw the plates and heard God’s voice declaring the translation’s divine origin. The Lord later called eight additional witnesses to affirm the truth of the Book of Mormon. These men faced adversity, yet they never denied their testimonies.

Preserving the Plates

Joseph Smith faced constant opposition, including attempts to steal the plates from him. The plates were moved from Manchester, New York, to Harmony, Pennsylvania, to ensure their safety. Martin Harris’s faith and sacrifice played a crucial role in financing the publication of the Book of Mormon.

A Message of Power and Truth

The historical facts and the testimonies of witnesses attest to the miraculous coming forth of the Book of Mormon. However, the power of this book extends beyond its history; it lies in its profound message. The Book of Mormon outlines the doctrines of the gospel, reveals the plan of salvation, and guides us toward peace in this life and eternal salvation in the life to come. It is a tool for the gathering of Israel and a means to come to know Jesus Christ.

A Personal Witness

Like many, my testimony of the Book of Mormon grew line upon line. Through sincere study, prayer, and faith, I received a witness of its truth and divinity. The warm feeling that swelled in my soul, enlightening my understanding, is a testimony that the Book of Mormon is indeed the word of God. It sustains my faith in Jesus Christ and serves as a shield against doubt and disbelief.

A Call to Action

I invite you to be part of the miraculous coming forth of the Book of Mormon in your own life. Study its words prayerfully and consistently. Ponder its promises and rich blessings. Follow the promise found in its pages: “Ask God … in the name of Christ if the book is true.” As you do so with a sincere heart, real intent, and faith in Christ, He will manifest the truth of it unto you by the power of the Holy Ghost.

A Testimony of Miracles

The Book of Mormon’s miraculous coming forth, from the angelic visitations to the translation process, witnesses, and publication, is a testament to its divine origin. It is not just a historical record but a powerful message that guides us toward Jesus Christ and eternal salvation. My testimony of the Book of Mormon is a continuous source of strength, and I testify that it is the word of God.
