The Message of Jesus and Our Modern World

Today’s inspiration is drawn from “O America, America” by Elder Mark E. Petersen of the Council of the Twelve during October 1979.

The Rejection of Jesus in His Time

When Jesus began his ministry, he faced rejection, even in his hometown of Nazareth. The people who had known him as a carpenter could not accept him as a teacher and prophet. This rejection is captured in Mark 6:3-4, where the people ask, “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us?” Jesus responded, “A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.”

Despite his teachings and miracles, many people in Jerusalem and other parts of Israel turned away from Jesus. He lamented over Jerusalem, saying, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, … how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!” (Matthew 23:37). This rejection led to the desolation and destruction of Jerusalem, as foretold by Jesus and later described by historians like Josephus.

Lessons from Ancient Israel

Elder Petersen emphasized that Israel’s repeated turning away from God and towards the gods of their neighbors led to their downfall. This pattern of rebellion and subsequent desolation serves as a stark warning: no nation can defy God and thrive. The fruits of rebellion against God are desolation and suffering.

Reflecting on Our Modern Society

As we look at our modern world, Elder Petersen’s words prompt us to ask: Are we, like ancient Israel, turning away from God? Do our actions reflect acceptance or rejection of Jesus Christ? He points out that many so-called Christian nations today violate God’s commandments openly. Sabbath observance, chastity, honesty, and other divine principles are often disregarded. Churches may alter or abandon sacred ordinances, and many people doubt fundamental truths about Jesus Christ.

This departure from Christ is evident in the divisions within Christianity and the turmoil in Christian nations. The Apostle Paul warned against divisions, urging believers to be united in Christ. Yet, modern Christianity is fragmented, and this disunity is a sign of our departure from true discipleship.

Our Personal Commitment

As members of this church, we must examine our own devotion to Christ. Baptism and the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper are covenants to serve God and keep his commandments. Each time we partake of the sacrament, we pledge to live by every word that proceeds from God’s mouth, including keeping the Sabbath holy, paying a full tithing, and living lives of chastity, honesty, and integrity.

Elder Petersen reminds us that obedience to God’s commandments is a demonstration of our love for Him. Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Failing to obey is a form of rejection.

The Call to Repentance and Renewal

Elder Petersen’s message is not one of condemnation but of hope. Jesus, despite being rejected, always extended love and forgiveness to those willing to repent. He mourned over Jerusalem but still offered them the chance to turn back to God.

Today, Jesus extends the same invitation to all nations and peoples. He calls to America, England, Germany, Scandinavia, and every other land, inviting them to return to Him. Acceptance of Jesus Christ and obedience to His teachings can bring peace, prosperity, and divine blessings to individuals and nations.

A Path to Peace and Prosperity

Imagine a world where nations truly accept Christ and live by His teachings. Elder Petersen envisions a world without wars, crime, poverty, and moral corruption—a world where the resources spent on armaments and crime prevention are redirected to improving human life. This vision is achievable if we turn to God with full purpose of heart.

As we sing “God Bless America,” let us also pray for God’s blessings on all nations. By turning to Christ and living by His precepts, we can achieve true peace and prosperity.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30). O America, America
