Today’s inspiration is drawn from President Spencer W. Kimball’s powerful message delivered during April 1974. In his talk, President Kimball emphasized the importance of living with purpose and conviction, reminding us that the cause we serve is just and worthy.
As we gather here, in this sacred conference, we have had the privilege of hearing from our beloved leaders. Their words have been more than speeches; they have been deeply rooted, sincere, and inspirational. These men have spoken the word of the Lord, guiding us in our journey of faith.
Now, as we prepare to return to our homes, our businesses, our professions, and our various roles in the world, it’s essential to reflect on the purpose behind our actions. We often get caught up in the “how” of life—how to achieve success, how to navigate challenges, and how to fulfill our responsibilities. However, the “why” is of even greater consequence.
As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we carry a unique commitment to serve our Lord. This commitment is not just a duty; it’s a sacred covenant. We are assured that the cause we embrace is just and worthy. We follow a divine plan laid out by our Savior, Jesus Christ, a plan that promises eternal life to those who remain faithful.
Consider the life that awaits us if we honor this commitment. It is a life teeming with purpose, brimming with accomplishments, and overflowing with joy and growth. If you’ve ever experienced profound joy in this life, imagine that joy multiplied and magnified. The next life, as revealed to us, will be an extension of our earthly journey, only more glorious, with increased purpose and intensified joys.
In his address, President Kimball quotes John Henry Jowett: “Anyone can build a house; we need the Lord [and parents] for the creation of a home.” This statement beautifully encapsulates the importance of our families and the sanctity of our homes. Our homes are not mere physical structures; they are the cradle of faith, love, and spiritual growth.
This conference has emphasized the crucial role of the family and the home in our lives. It is within these sacred walls that we can find inspiration and revelation. In a world where personal ingenuity often guides decisions, our reliance on the Lord’s guidance in our homes is paramount. Making conclusions solely based on our own understanding can lead to costly mistakes.
President Kimball reminds us that, for some reason, many are willing to dedicate years to the pursuit of knowledge in various fields, yet they often approach the quest for knowledge about God with intermittent prayers and limited research. The Lord has provided clear guidance on how we can truly come to know Him—through searching the scriptures and prayer.
As Jesus stated in John 5:39, “Search the scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” Our spiritual growth and understanding of God are deeply intertwined with our study of His word.
The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Corinthians, highlighted the importance of wisdom derived from the Spirit of God. He contrasted it with the wisdom of the world, emphasizing that our faith should not rest on human wisdom but on the power of God.
In today’s world, it’s easy to be swept away by worldly wisdom, trends, and philosophies. However, the spiritual discernment that comes from the Spirit of God guides us toward eternal truths. Our understanding of God’s plan and His role in our lives goes beyond earthly knowledge—it’s wisdom that can only be obtained through the Spirit.
President Kimball shares insights about dreams, emphasizing their significance in spiritual experiences. He cites the example of Job, who recognized that “the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding” (Job 32:8). Dreams, in some cases, serve as a means through which God imparts His wisdom and understanding to us.
The experience shared by Elder George F. Richards further illustrates the power of dreams in strengthening one’s testimony. In his dream, he stood in the presence of the Savior and felt a profound love that transcended human expression. This love inspired a commitment to the Savior’s cause that he carried throughout his life.
President Kimball tells a fascinating story about Colonel Ingersoll and General Lew Wallace. Colonel Ingersoll challenged General Wallace to write a romantic novel depicting Jesus Christ as merely a man among men, not divine. General Wallace took up the challenge, but as he delved deeper into the life and character of Jesus, he underwent a transformation.
The more General Wallace studied Jesus’s life, the more he became convinced of His divinity. His resulting novel, “Ben Hur,” not only became a literary classic but also served as a testament to the divine nature of our Savior.
President Kimball concludes his message by bearing his testimony, expressing his knowledge that Jesus Christ lives and that we can be with Him. He emphasizes the importance of living according to the commandments and teachings of the Lord.
As we reflect on President Kimball’s message, let us consider our own lives. Are we living with purpose and conviction, driven by our commitment to the just and worthy cause of the gospel of Jesus Christ? Are we seeking divine wisdom through scripture study and prayer? Are we open to the possibility of spiritual experiences, including dreams and revelations?
In a world filled with distractions and worldly influences, let us resolve to live in a way that aligns with our commitment to the Savior. Let us build homes filled with love and faith. Let us seek wisdom beyond the knowledge of the world, and let us be open to the workings of the Spirit. Link to the original: Click Here
