Becoming Men in Whom the Spirit of God Is

Today’s inspiration is drawn from “Becoming Men in Whom the Spirit of God Is” by Elder L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles during April 2002. In his heartfelt message, Elder Perry highlights the importance of living a life guided by the Spirit of God, drawing lessons from the lives of his father and biblical figures, particularly Joseph of Egypt.

The Blessing of the Priesthood

Elder Perry opens his remarks by addressing young men who bear the holy Aaronic Priesthood, emphasizing the special blessing and responsibility it entails. The priesthood, he explains, multiplies our powers, abilities, and discernment. This sacred calling offers opportunities to grow spiritually and become men in whom the Spirit of God resides.

Lessons from Elder Perry's Father

Elder Perry shares a touching story about his father, who, as a young man, sought an education in Salt Lake City. His father found employment with President Joseph F. Smith, caring for the prophet’s two cows. Through this experience, Elder Perry’s father learned valuable lessons about diligence, humility, and faithfulness. He witnessed firsthand the prophet’s devotion and spiritual strength, especially during family prayers, which left a lasting impression on him.

Joseph of Egypt: A Model of Faithfulness

The story of Joseph of Egypt serves as a powerful example of someone who lived by the Spirit of God. Despite facing numerous trials and adversities, Joseph remained faithful to God. Sold into slavery by his brothers, he rose to prominence in Egypt due to his unwavering faith and integrity. Genesis 41:38 captures Pharaoh’s recognition of Joseph’s unique spiritual qualities: “Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?”

The Gift of the Holy Ghost

Elder Perry likens the Holy Ghost to the greatest antivirus program, protecting us from the spiritual viruses that Satan seeks to spread. He emphasizes the importance of having the Holy Ghost as a permanent guide and witness in our lives, quoting President Joseph F. Smith’s words on the gift of the Holy Ghost being an “abiding witness.” This divine gift helps us discern right from wrong and guides us through life’s challenges.

Fleeing from Temptation

Joseph of Egypt’s story offers a crucial lesson on resisting temptation. When Potiphar’s wife made advances toward him, Joseph fled from the situation, choosing to uphold his integrity and faithfulness to God. This act of fleeing from evil is a powerful reminder for us to avoid situations that compromise our values and spiritual well-being.

Living by the Spirit

To become men and women in whom the Spirit of God dwells, we must live righteously and heed the promptings of the Holy Ghost. Elder Perry advises us to listen to the still, small voice that warns us against engaging in harmful activities. Whether it’s turning off inappropriate music, avoiding degrading television programs, or steering clear of negative online content, the Holy Ghost will guide us toward righteousness.

Conclusion

As we strive to live by the Spirit, we will be blessed with wisdom, knowledge, power, and glory. The Lord promises to bless our lives according to our faithfulness. By studying the lives of great prophets and following their examples, we can draw closer to our Maker and enjoy the fruits of the gospel. Let us commit to becoming men and women in whom the Spirit of God resides, using our influence to make the world a better place.

Embrace the gift of the Holy Ghost in your daily life.

Seek to live with integrity and righteousness, making choices that align with the teachings of Jesus Christ. By doing so, you can help make the world a better place, one righteous decision at a time. Link to original: Becoming Men in Whom the Spirit of God Is
